Police said the man, Sursh Kannan, belonged to Kamakshipuram near Theni district in Tamil Nadu.
Police have retrieved a photograph of the victim from Suresh's mobile phone.
The incident occurred on October 20 at Kannur railway station when 41-year-old Fatima boarded the Kannur-Ernakulam Executive Express.
Fatima, belonging to Kondotti in Malappuram district, had run out of the compartment screaming in pain when she was noticed by others trying to board the train.
She was first rushed to the district hospital in Kannur and was later shifted to the Kozhikode Medical College, where she succumbed to burns the next day.
