: Rains lashed several parts of the city and its neighbourhood on Sunday with the Met office forecasting more showers during the next two days.
The incessant rains was due to the formation of upper air circulation and Alangayam in Vellore district in north Tamil Nadu received the maximum rainfall of 15 cm in the last 24 hours ended at 8.30 am on Sunday, Regional Meteorological Centre Director N Puviarasan said.
"During the next 24-48 hours, due to upper air circulation moderate rainfall may occur across several districts in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry", he told reporters.
During the last 24 hours, Alangayam in Vellore district received highest rainfall at 15 cm, followed by Tirupattur 10 cm, Thirupuvanam and Virudhunagar recording 7 cms each.
In a bulletin, the weather office said heavy to very heavy rain was likely to occur at isolated places over Tamilnadu (Vellore, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Ariyalur, Perambalur and Thiruvarur districts), Karaikal and Puducherry in the next two days.
Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Kerala, South interior Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Telangana.
For Chennai and its neighbourhood, Puviarasan said, sky condition was likely to be cloudy and light to moderate rainfall may occur during the next 24-48 hours.
The rains in north Tamil Nadu comes days after several parts of the state in the Western Ghats such as the Nilgiris districts, were battered by downpour under the influence of the vigorous South West Monsoon.
