Last year, Union Environment Ministry had issued fresh guidelines, under which the existing mining leases that had obtained forest clearance (FC) for a part of forest land were given 'general approval' for the remaining area with some riders.
It had, however, given one year time till April 1, 2016 for those mining leases which had not obtained FC and said it would not allow mining after expiry of this deadline.

Recently, the government had also lowered rates of Net Present Value (NPV) payable for use of forest land for underground mining projects which have got in-principal nod under the Forest Conservation Act.
