Mizoram govt issues notification constituting Sinlung Hills

Mizoram government today issued a notification constituting a 12-member Interim Council of the Sinlung Hills Council, an official said.

The Sinlung Hills Council was set up as per the accord signed by the Mizoram government and the erstwhile underground Manipur-based Hmar People's Convention (Democratic) on April 2 this year.

The notification was signed by the additional secretary in the Home department, Lalbiakzama said the term of the interim council would be for six months and would be effective from today.

Lalthalien, a church leader from Imphal in Manipur was appointed as chief executive member (CEM) of the interim council, the official said.

Working chairman of the HPC (D) L T Hmar was appointed as chairman of the interim council while Lalbieknung Hmar was appointed as deputy chairman, he said.

Four people - Lalthlamuana Hmar, Darliensung Ralsun, J C Zairemkunga and Melody Lalchhuangzeli (daughter of the outfit's ageing chairman H Zosangbera) were appointed as Executive Members (EM) of the interim council while five other people were appointed as members.

Deputy Commissioner of Aizawl district would convene the first session of the interim council within 30 days when the members would be administered oath of affirmation by the deputy commissioner.

The memorandum of settlement stipulated that the present Sinlung Hills Development Council would be rechristened as Sinlung Hills Council and it would have higher political and financial autonomy.

After expiry of the term of the interim council, members of the council would be elected by the people within the area of the council.
