The Congress today accused Prime minister Narendra Modi of belittling the achievements of his predecessors and lowering the level of political debate by using "intemperate language" against his political rivals.
Deputy Leader of Congress in Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma also alleged that Modi was politicising the army.
Talking to reporters here, he said, "Indian Army does not belong to any party and attempts to politicise the army to derive political mileage is unfortunate. The reported remarks of Modi that his government had given free hand to the army to conduct the surgical strikes are an insult to previous prime ministers including Indira Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Atal Bihari Vajpayee," he said.
The 1971 war which created Bangladesh was unprecedented in history, the army defeated Pakistan in 1965 war whileunder the leadership of Vajpayee, successful Kargil operations were conducted, he said.
The surgical strikes did not have any "sobering or deterrent" effect on Pakistan and 44 army jawans were killed after surgical strikes in five major and 17 small incidents, Sharma claimed.
Accusing the prime minister of lowering the level of political debate in election speeches in Uttar Pradesh, he said the "tone and tenor" of Modi's speeches reflect his "autocratic attitude".
It appears that "decency and tolerance" are missing, he said.
Reiterating that the demonetisation had hit the economy, retarded growth and caused avoidable inconvenience to people, Sharma said "curbing black money and corruption, eliminating fake currency and chokingfunds of terrorist outfits" were stated objectivesof the move but none of them was achieved and surprisingly fake new Rs 2000 currency notes are already in circulation.
He said the economy received a severe setback and it would take 20 years for it to recover.
