Monsoon making steady advance; Odisha warned of rains, winds

The southwest monsoon is making a steady advance into Maharashtra and West Bengal and a "good week" has been predicted, while the weatherman has warned of heavy rains and gusty surface winds in several parts of Odisha tomorrow.
The national capital had a moderately warm day today with the maximum temperature settling at 37.8 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average. The minimum temperature settled at 25.5 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal.
India Meteorological Department Director General K J Ramesh said the monsoon is in an "active phase" and has reached Mumbai, Mahabaleshwar (in Maharashtra) and several parts of the Konkan region, apart from Bijapur district in north Karnataka.

"There is also a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal and this will take the monsoon to several parts of West Bengal. The coming week will be very good for the advance of monsoon on the western side and east India," Ramesh said.
Heavy rains coupled with gusty surface wind is likely to pound several areas of Odisha due to the well-marked low pressure over the Bay of Bengal tomorrow and fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea.
The low pressure area over northern parts of central Bay of Bengal now lies as a well marked low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood, the MeT office in the state said.

Under its impact, rain and thundershower are likely to occur at most places over coastal Odisha and at many places over interior districts during the next 24 hours, it said.

In addition, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj and heavy rainfall in Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Khurda, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Puri, Gajapati, Nayagarh and Ganjam in the next 24 hours, it said.
Maximum temperatures in most parts of Punjab and Haryana continued to remain below the normal levels. Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, registered a maximum of 35.6 degrees Celsius, four notches below normal.

The mercury went down by 1 to 5 notches in comparison to yesterday at most places in Rajasthan due to moderate to light rainfall. In the last 24 hours, 2 cm rainfall was recorded each in Sriganganagar and Bhadra, 1 cm each in Bikaner, Padampur, Sadulsahar, Sangaria, Pilibanga, Taranagar etc.
But, weather remained mainly dry in most parts of Bihar barring its north-eastern region where a few places recorded light rainfall, the met office said
The minimum temperatures dropped marginally in Himachal Pradesh due to scattered rains and strong winds in Shimla and surrounding areas.
Heavy rainfall occurred at isolated places over West Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh while thunderstorm was observed at many places over the region.

Rainfall occurred at most places over Kerala, Lakshadweep, Coastal Karnataka and interior Karnataka and at a few places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana; and at isolated places over Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema.
