"My government is now concentrating on skill development programmes as only school education is not enough for our students to get jobs and sustain in this competitive world," Dikshit said.
Dikshit was speaking after conferring Indira Awards for the year 2012 to teachers, students and schools at a function organised by Education Department.
Emphasising the need for imparting job-oriented course to youngsters, Dikshit said her government has already decided to set up a world class institute on skill development with technical expertise and assistance from Singapore government.
The centre would be set up at Jonapur in South Delhi, officials said, adding the institute would be modelled on the Institute of Technical Studies in Singapore.
Singapore government had offered to provide technical expertise to the proposed institute during Dikshit's visit to that country in October last year.
Complimenting the Education Department, Dikshit said government schools have outshone public schools in Delhi in respect of results in class X and XII.
"The education system in Delhi has been transformed to facilitate all-round development of students. In fact, Delhi government schools are now even considered better than the public schools and Kendriya Vidyalayas," she said.
Dikshit presented 'Best School Chief Minister's trophy' to Sarvodaya Co-Education Vidyalaya, Rohini. The award carries a cash prize of Rs one lakh and a citation. MORE
