A 26-year-old Delhi Police constable was allegedly shot dead by two unidentified bike-borne assailants today in north-east Delhi while he was on duty.
The victim, identified as Dharampal, was posted at Jaffrabad police station a month ago and deputed as beat constable of Maujpur area.
Today, he had gone to a shop for arms verification. At around 12.30 PM, when he came out and sat on his motorcycle, two motorcycle-borne assailants, who were allegedly waiting there, first attacked him with a knife, police said, adding he sustained injuries in his waist and then assailants shot at him twice from close range.
"One of the bullet hit him in his head while the other in his abdomen. As he collapsed on the ground, the attackers fled on their bike. It seems that they even took away Dharampal's service revolver with them as it was not found on the spot," said a police official.
Someone made a PCR call following which a police team rushed to the spot and rushed him to GTB hospital where he was declared brought dead.
"It seems to be a case of personal enmity as the assailants were waiting for him but we are probing the case from all possible angles. We have got some CCTV footage from the nearby area but the assailants could not be identified as they were wearing helmets," the official said.
Senior police officials rushed to the spot soon after the incident and a forensic team picked up circumstantial evidence. A case of murder has been registered and the Crime Branch and Special Cell have also been roped in along with local police to investigate the case.
A native of Hapur, Dharampal was posted in northeast district since 2011 and was deputed at Jaffrabad Police Station around a month ago.
He had joined Delhi Police in 2010 and had served at Okhla in south-east Delhi before being transferred to northeast district. His family has been informed about the incident.
This is second such incident in just two months where a constable posted at Jaffrabad police station has been gunned down by criminals. Recently, a constable named Shivraj Tomar was shot dead by an alleged criminal, who was later killed in an encounter by Special Cell.
