Smoke emanating from one of the coaches in an MRTS train today created panic among passengers, but none were injured, Railway officials said.
The smoke was detected near the wheel of one of the coaches of Beach-Velachery service near Thiruvanmiyur this morning, but no one was injured in the incident, they said.
As soon as the train entered Thiruvanmiyur station, the issue was attended to, they said, adding the incident resulted in a brief slowdown of rail traffic on the route.
The railway station established in 1886 was also cleaned
thoroughly to receive the train which was earlier given a 'shahi' bath.
People decorated the platform with balloons, distributed water bottles to passengers, gave mementos to crew and also took selfies with the train.
Emotional scenes were witnessed at the station when the metre gauge train began its last journey from the century-old railway station.
Locals and railway staffers crowded the station to bid farewell to the last train and be a part of the historical moment.
Railway pointsman J P Dixit looked nostalgic as he rubbed out the the arrival/departure time of Aishbagh-Mailani meter gauge trains from the blackboard outside the station master's cabin.
"I will retire in November but I have boarded these trains to college as did my forefathers," he recalled.
"The 4 AM train was like an alarm to me, I woke up to the sound of its whistle. Now, that would be no more," said a resident of Bargadi Mangath village that is adjacent to railway line.
Many bought a ticket costing Rs 10 for the 15 km journey between Aisbagh and BKT, to preserve it for posterity, though they did not board the train.
The flower bedecked train was piloted by Ramesh Kumar Singh and Dilip Kumar, while Anil Kumar and Sabita were the guards.
The compartments of the train and its engine would be kept in rail museum, even as the NER looks forward to run high-speed trains once the track is converted into broad gauge.
