Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today expressed concern at the law and order situation prevailing in the state in view of the decades-old militancy and called for a coordinated approach from Centre and other NE states to address the root cause.
"The problems posed by militancy are complex in nature and can only be addressed effectively through a multi-pronged approach by looking at the root cause," Sangma said while addressing on Independence Day celebration at Polo grounds here.
He said these problems have also been posing serious challenges to many of our neighbouring states in the north east, particularly states having porous international border with neighbouring countries.
"Hence, there is a need for a co-ordinated approach along with active support from the Central Government to tackle the problem of militancy effectively," he said.
Maintaining that sustained peace and order are the pre-requisites for any development, Mukul said although the security situation in the Garo Hills region remains a cause of concern, the success of the security forces in the operations against the militants and the criminal elements has been commendable in the recent months.
On the inter-state boundary dispute with Assam, the Chief Minister said his is committed to address and resolve the issue.
On influx, Mukul said his government has set priority in resolving the issue of influx and illegal immigration.
He also said that a comprehensive mechanism to deal with influx more effective than the Inner Line Permit System under Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulations, will be put in place at the earliest.
"Different Government machineries have been geared up to accomplish this objective," he said.
