He also pulled up policemen connected to these raids, who have been instructed to desist from unnecessarily harassing the public.
"At present, I would not like to comment anything about Thursday's police raids, since an inquiry is on. However, I have instructed the city police to be cautious while performing such policing and to prevent unnecessary harassment to the public," Mumbai Police Commissioner Maria told PTI.
However, the Mumbai police chief did not answer a question whether moral policing will be stopped by the police under his tenure as the city's police commissioner.
Singh has started inquiring with officials of the Malwani police raiding team, managers and other concerned staff of hotels, lodges and resorts which where raided, they said.
Last Thursday, a team of officials from Malwani police station, led by DCP (Zone XI) Vikram Deshmane, had raided hotels, lodges and resorts at Madh Island and Aksa beach, after which the police had arrested 61 people, including 13 couples, under Section 110 of the Maharashtra Police Act.
All the 61 arrested people were let off the same day after being fined Rs 1,200 each, he had said.
