An outfit of Kerala's influential Nair community today rejected a call by a leader of numerically strong Ezhava community for a broad Hindu alliance in the state, saying efforts being done in this direction were meant to "cover up someone's misdeeds."
Addressing a conference of Nair leaders on the occasion of Vijayadashami celebrations in Changanacherry near here, General Secretary of Nair Service Society, G Sukumaran Nair said NSS stands for secular principles and it cannot associate with an organisation to be formed in the name of protecting interests of Hindus in the state.
"Somebody is going to form a new organisation to protect interests of Hindus in the state. Through this, they are making an attempt to prevent people discovering the truth about their wrongdoings. ..We kept away from such initiatives as we could realise the selfish motives behind it," Nair said.
His statement comes at a time when the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP), headed by Ezhava leader Vellappally Natesan is making efforts to form a political party organising various caste outfits in the state to protect the interests of Hindus.
As the SNDP Yogam General Secretary was making intense efforts to woo Hindu organisations in his fold, Kerala's mainstream political parties including CPI(M) and Congress, fearing a backlash, have opposed the move.
They allegedly encouraged Natesan's opponents in the Ezhava community to level charges against him on the death of Swami Saswathikananda of Sivagiri Mutt 12 years ago.
Sukumaran Nair said NSS was not ready for forming a political party for mounting a political pressure.
"We are not interested in becoming a part of such initiatives," he said.
SNDP Yogam had decided to hold a Save Kerala Yatra from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram from November 15 to 30 by organising Kerala's Hindu caste outfits under one umbrella.
The decision of SNDP Yogam, founded by 19th century saint reformer Sree Narayana Guru, assumes significance as BJP, which is yet to open its account in the state, has already started wooing the organisation into its fold for electoral gains.
With BJP looking to expand its base ahead of Assembly elections next year, Natesan had held a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi recently.BJP President Amit Shah and VHP leader Praveen Togadia had also met Natesan some time back.
