Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi today expressed concern over the financial situation of mediapersons in the country saying while from pen they have become "soldiers of computers and cameras". Their financial situation has not improved.
Addressing a gathering while giving "Narad Puraskar" for journalists at an event organised here by Vishwa Sanwad Kendra here, Naqvi said the media is the most independent and powerful in India but weak and insecure financial situation of media persons is a matter of concern.
"We have to think seriously about situation of mediapersons as they show direction to the society through their work," Naqvi said according to a press release issued by his office.
Naqvi said the financial situation of mediapersons working in different organisations is not good which affects honest, transparent and professional journalism.
He said journalists, especially young mediapersons, must take benefit from the Government's welfare schemes such as Atal Pension Yojna.
Noting that India is the biggest democracy of the world and media is an important pillar of the country, Naqvi said that the safety, prosperity of this pillar is in the interest of our democratic system.
He said that social media, along with electronic and print media, has created a space for itself in the society.
"Due to media's vigil, governments work with complete alertness. Public keeps an eye on politicians, journalists, and police and the people have great expectations from these three sections," Naqvi said.
