National policy for domestic workers under govt consideration

There are an estimated at 41.33 lakh domestic workers in the country and a policy framework prepared by a task force to ensure their welfare is under Centre's consideration, the Rajya Sabha was today informed.
In a written reply, Minister of State for Mines, Steel, Labour and Employment Vishnu Deo Sai said that the government had set up a task force to evolve a policy frame work for domestic workers in the context of regulatory mechanism and providing social security.
He said, according to the last periodical employment unemployment survey conducted by NSSO in 2011-12, the total number of domestic workers has been estimated at 41.33 lakh, out of which 22.76 women workers are employed in urban areas.
To another question, he said that unemployment rate on usual status among the youth in the age group of 15-29 year was estimated at 6.1 per cent in the country, as per the National Sample Survey Office conducted in 2011-12.
Sai said that the 12th five year plan projects five crore new work opportunities to be generated in the non-farm sector and skill certification to equivalent numbers.
"To improve exchange of employment related information in the labour market, the government has also decided to convert Employment Exchanges into career centres in collaboration with the state governments for providing counselling services to students and job-seekers along with other employment related assistance," he added.
