Special Police Officer Mushtaq Ahmad, who was posted as personal security officer of Irfan Ahmad, was hit by two bullets - one in the abdomen and another in a hand - when militants opened fire at him outside a shop in the Baramulla district town, police said.
He was rushed to a hospital where he later succumbed to injuries, they said.
The NC worker was inside the mobile shop in the town at the time of the militant attack and escaped unhurt.
"The cop was waiting outside the mobile shop for Irfan who had been invited by its owner in connection with the inauguration of his shop," the spokesman said.
Police assisted by paramilitary forces immediately cordoned off the area and a hunt had been launched to nab the militants involved in the incident.
No one has been arrested so far.
