The National Commission of Women (NCW) today welcomed the Supreme Court judgement that has put an end to a 59-year-old practice in Bollywood of not allowing women to register as make-up artists.
Terming it as a major victory for women make-up artists all over the country, NCW Chairperson Lalitha Kumaramangalam said that "at last justice has prevailed".
The apex court, in its order on Monday, had said that such "shocking" discrimination on the basis of gender is violative of constitutional values.
The court order had come on a PIL filed by one Charu Khurana and other women make-up artists who alleged that female artists were not allowed to be a member of the Cine Costume and Make up Artists Association (CCMAA), which effectively bars them from working in the industry.
The NCW Chairperson said she was glad that the commission had provided adequate legal support in this matter.
"The Commission had taken the initiative on the representation of Charu Khurana alleging deprivation of her fundamental rights due to the biased approach of CCMAA and Film Employees Federation of South India (FEESI). NCW was also allowed to be a party respondent in the writ petition," a release NCW said.
