An expert committee of the International Summit on Laparoscopic Pancreatic Surgeries will work for standardisation of care for pancreatic cancer for surgeons worldwide, a senior doctor has said.
"Some 35 world leaders in this speciality, including from Japan, Korea, the US, and UK, are discussing about the possibility to create a standardised technique for surgeries for pancreatic cancer," Organising Chairman of the Summit and Director of Gem Hospital Dr C Palanivelu told reporters here last night on the sidelines of the four-day Summit.
The Summit started on October 6 and will end tomorrow.
The meet also proposed to bring out a position statement based on the present literature evidence on laparoscopic pancreatic resections, he said.
Stating that both open and laparoscopic surgeries are done by different methods across the world, a leading key hole surgeon from Japan, Go Wakabayashi said once standardisation was done, it would help train upcoming surgeons to handle cases in difficult situation.
Moreover, the cost of surgeries could also be brought down since there was insurance cover for such surgeries in many countries, he said.
However, Palanivelu said hardly one or two surgeries like removing gall bladder stones by keyhole method are covered in India under insurance.
He said the government should come forward and bring as many surgeries as possible under insurance cover for the benefit of those affected with pancreatic cancer, which is increasing across the country.
