Pramod Chandra Mody, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax Department in Ahmedabad, is set to assume charge as the Principal Chief IT Commissioner of Mumbai from tomorrow.
The transfer comes amid reports that the overall corporate tax collection so far has been poor and the department has shot off letters to top corporates to pay up 45 per cent of their annual tax liabilities by tomorrow, the last day for advance tax payment for the second quarter.
Mody will take over from Pawan Parmar Singh who has been transferred to Bhopal. Singh was elevated only last month, IT Department sources told PTI.
Mody will also be head of the Mumbai zone of the IT department.
Mumbai collects one third of the pan-India direct taxes as it is home to 45 of the top 100 corporates.
Gujarat is the fourth largest contributor to the direct tax revenue. The net collection recorded by the region in FY17 was Rs 39,901 crore, 4.8 per cent of the entire direct tax collection for the year.
