Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Mansukh L Mandaviya today said the Centre has approved a project to widen and upgrade National Highway 54 at an estimated cost of Rs 6,168 crore.
Addressing a press conference in Aizawl this evening Mandaviya said the road project would include paved shoulder and geometric improvements.
"The project has been sanctioned for implementation through funding from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the North East Road Network Connectivity Project Phase-1 scheme," he said.
The Minister said the project would result in overall development of the region and help in improving sub-regional socio-economic development, growth of trade and tourism within the country and with neighbouring countries.
"This would also facilitate better international connectivity between India and Myanmar," he said adding it would also be significant from the international security point of view.
"This Highway also connects to the Kaladan Multi Modal Transport Corridor, which connects the North Eastern states and the rest of India to Myanmar through road, inland water and marine transport," Mandaviya said.
The Minister said the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana was being implemented to provide affordable and quality generic medicines to all sections of the society at 50 per cent less cost of branded medicines.
He said 25 generic medicine shops would be opened across Mizoram covering all civil sub-divisions.
