NHRC seeks report from Govt over fire in old age home

National Human Rights Commission today issued notices to the Delhi government and police, seeking a report about a fire incident in an old age shelter home which was being run from make shift tents in Vasant Kunj here in which two persons were killed.
According to an NHRC statement released today, the notices were issued to the Chief Secretary, Government of NCT of Delhi and Delhi Police Commissioner calling for a detailed report in the matter within four weeks.
The notices were issued after the Commission took suo motu cognisance of a media report that two persons were killed in the fire which broke out in an old age shelter home in Vasant Kunj in the intervening night of April 3 and 4.
The deceased were 60-year old Ramesh Chand and a 27-year old dumb woman, Poonam.
The home, being run by NGO Earth Savior Foundation, primarily houses mentally disabled persons, senior citizens and those left by their children. At the time of incident, there were about 150 inmates in the 10 make shift tents.
Most of them were rescued but a few of them are still missing and it is suspected that they would have run away after the incident.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, amount to serious violation of human rights of the victims.
