NSE benchmark Nifty ended with modest gains today ahead of US Federal Reserve's policy meet outcome.
Infra stocks led the gains, followed by financials, realty, energy and FMCG sectors. Media, pharma, metal and auto counters witnessed profit-booking.
Overseas, most Asian markets ended lower and European markets were also trading weak as investors awaited a likely hike in US interest rates.
Back home, the Nifty rose by 30.90 points or 0.31 per cent to end at 10,155.25, before hovering in a range of 10,227.30 and 10,132.95. It saw an intra-day movement of 94.35 points.
Sector-wise, Infra rose 0.94 per cent, Realty 0.79 per cent, Energy 0.61 per cent, Finance Service 0.66 per cent, Bank 0.36 per cent and Private Bank 0.28 per cent.
On the other hand, Media fell by 0.70 per cent, followed by Pharma 0.62 per cent, Metal 0.46 per cent, Auto 0.14 per cent and PSU Bank 0.07 per cent.
Major index gainers were Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, NTPC, UltraTech Cement, Indiabulls Housing Finance, BPCL, Larsen and HDFC.
The losers were Tata Steel, Bosch Ltd, Adani Ports, Tata Motors, Zee, Aurobindo Pharma and Bajaj Auto.
The market breadth, indicating its overall health, remained negative as 868 scrips advanced and 904 declined, while 89 remained unchanged.
As many as 221 securities hit their price bands.
The cash segment turnover rose to Rs 28,410.65 crore from Rs 27,610.57 crore as on Tuesday.
A total of 14,814.44 lakh shares changed hands in 1,03,53,900 trades. The market capitalisation of listed firms on the NSE stood at Rs 1,39,89,510.26 crore.
