Nifty hits new closing peak at 9,351, up 45 pts

The NSE Nifty today closed at a new all-time high of 9,352 by gaining another 45 points, amid sustained buying in key FMCG, auto and banking counters supported by bullish global cues and string of strong quarterly results.
Extending gains for the third consecutive session, the key indices resumed higher and witnessed gradual upmove for most of the session despite volatility. It recovered smartly from late afternoon profit-booking, as hectic short-covering ahead of derivative expiry tomorrow led the index to close with modest gains.
The NSE 50-share index opened at 9,336.20 and hovered between all-time high of 9,367.00 and low of 9,301.35 before settling at 9,351.85 -- a new record closing high, showing a gain of 45.25 points, or 0.49 per cent. It saw an intra-day movement of 65.65 points.
Asian market ended higher following the rise in US stocks on the back of strong earnings and on expectations for US President Donald Trump's impending tax reforms.
European stocks were mixed as markets eyed a fresh batch of corporate earnings reports, although the first round of the French presidential election on Sunday still lent some support.
Nifty FMCG climbed by 2.27 per cent, followed by consumption 1.17 per cent, auto 0.98 per cent, private banks 0.89 per cent, banks 0.85 per cent and PSU banks 0.52 per cent.
While, profit-booking was seen in realty, leading to fall of 2.97 per cent; IT fell by 1.23 per cent, energy 1.03 per cent, pharma 0.43 per cent and infra 0.37 per cent.
The broader mid-cap and small-cap also witnessed selling.
Major index gainers were -- M&M (3.46 per cent), ITC (3.41 per cent), Hndalco (2.76 per cent), HDFC (2.43 per cent) and HUL (1.88 per cent).
The losers included TechM (2.53 per cent), HCL Tech (2.40 per cent), Adani Ports (2.37 per cent), Infratel (2.12 per cent) and Infy (1.62 per cent).
A total of 496 shares advanced and 1,203 declined while 68 ruled steady.
Total securities that hit their price bands were 121.
Turnover in the cash segment rose to Rs 29,475.33 crore, from Rs 29,310.01 crore yesterday.
A total of 15,100.08 lakh shares changed hands in 10,289,067 trades. The market capitalisation of listed of firms stood at Rs 12,300,290 crore.
