Timely arrival of monsoon rains in Kerala and North East region cheered investors, aided small gains on the bourses.
In overseas markets, European shares edged lower as investors shifted their attention to political events going on in Europe. Asian stocks ended mixed. Markets in Hong Kong and China were closed for a public holiday.
The NSE 50-share Nifty index opened lower at 9,590.65 and hovered between 9,635.30 and 9,581.20 before finishing at 9,624.55, a gain of 19.65 points, or 0.20 per cent.
Sector-wise, Pharma rose 2.65 per cent, PSU Bank 1.77 per cent, Realty 1.02 per cent, Bank 0.54 per cent, Pvt Bank 0.50 per cent, Media 0.51 per cent and Auto 0.45 per cent.
However, FMCG and Infra fell by 0.63 per cent and 0.35 per cent, respectively.
In broader market, the mid-cap gained by 1.08 per cent while, small-cap indices eased by 0.06 per cent.
Major index gainers were Auropharma (13.25 per cent), Adaniport (3.83 per cent), Bank Of Baroda (2.79 per cent), NTPC (3.04 per cent), Tech M (2.33 per cent), ICICI Bank (2.10 per cent) and Dr Reddy (2.07 per cent).
A total of 894 scrips declined, 768 declined, while 84 remained unchanged.
Total securities that hit their price bands were 155.
Turnover in the cash segment fell to Rs 24,189.46 crore, from Rs 26,025.27 crore yesterday.
A total of 13,224.90 lakh shares changed hands in 90,33,258 trades.
The market capitalisation of listed firms on the NSE stood at Rs 1,23,74,361.24 crore.
