Prime Minister Narendra Modi today denied any move to reduce compensation to farmers under the Land Acquisition Act or any dilution of the Food Security Act as he sought support of opposition in pushing key legislations in Parliament.
"There is a misinformation campaign about Food Security Act. There is no decision by the government to reduce coverage from 67 per cent of the population. It is not being brought down to 40 per cent. Do not spread such myth," he said in Rajya Sabha.
He was replying to a debate on Motion of Thanks to the President's Address.
On the moves to amend the Land Acquisition Act passed in 2013 during the UPA rule, Modi again said "rumours" were being circulated that compensation to farmers is being reduced.
"...Please let us not spread the rumours that the compensation would be reduced. No one has touched it nor anyone will touch it. What was decided has been retained," he asserted.
At the same time, he said there were certain "weaknesses" in the existing Act which need to be addressed to ensure that land is available for irrigation, housing, village roads and other infrastructure development projects.
"If there is any provisions (in the bill) going against the interest of the farmers, I have said on day one, we are ready to corrct it," he said replying to a debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President's address in Rajya Sabha.
