Responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal, the Kahalgaon unit of NTPC has built toilets in five girls' schools and is in the process of building toilets in 20 more schools and over a hundred households.
"We have sent a proposal to NTPC headquarters in New Delhi for the 2014-15 fiscal to construct toilets in 20 girls' schools in Kahalgaon and in Godda district in neighbouring Jharkhand," R Raghunathan, Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility, NTPC Kahalgaon, told PTI.
He said that NTPC Kahalgaon has been carrying on the task of constructing toilets in schools and houses of poor people, but after the PM's appeal, the process was accelerated.
Raghunathan said there were 100 girls' schools in Kahalgaon sub-division of Bhagalpur district and Godda district in Jharkhand, out of which 68 were without toilets.
The thermal power unit has already constructed toilets in 118 houses in the two places, he said, adding, there was a proposal to build toilets in 250 more households in there.
General Manager (Operation and Maintenance) N K Sinha said NTPC was a socially committed organisation, taking up its corporate social responsibility sincerely.
NTPC Kahalgaon has taken a lot of developmental activities in three adopted villages in Kahalgaon and Godda each and has distributed 300 mosquito nets in villages around it, he said.
Kahalgaon Super Thermal power station is the seventh station of NTPC with an installed capacity of 4x210 MW (Stage I) and 3x500 MW (stage 2).
Headman of Mahesamunda Panchayat Jogendra Mandal thanked NTPC for the steps taken in the villages. His counterpart in Ekchari panchayat U P Patel said the efforts have improved living conditions of the poor, particularly women and girls, who face a lot of problems in the absence of lavatories in schools and households.
