Opposition Meghalaya Peoples' Forum today demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma for his "failure" to resolve the issue pertaining to Inner Line Permit (ILP) and illegal influx into the state.
The decision was taken at the meeting of the MPF comprising United Democratic Party (UDP), National People's Party (NPP) and other opposition parties held here on Monday evening.
"We demand that Mukul Sangma should immediately resign and step down from the chief minister's chair," MPF member and UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh told reporters after the meeting here.
According to the MPF, it is due to the "failure and adamant attitude" of the chief minister which has resulted to the massive agitations launched by the pro-ILP activists recently that have crippled normal functioning in the entire state.
He said, "We would also shoot an official letter to Mukul demanding his resignation," adding, "If he (Mukul) fails to respond positively , the MPF would adopt other means of strategy to make his resignation happen".
NPP leader James Sangma said, "Instead of addressing the issue, the chief minister is camping in New Delhi which clearly shows the insensitive attitude towards the issue".
"We do not need a visiting chief minister but we want a person, who is in station and resolve the issue in the interest of the people of the state," he said.
According to MPF, Sangma has lost his moral and legal ground to continue as the chief minister of the state.
Meanwhile, the outfit has further decided to take up the issues pertaining to the deteriorating law and order situation in Garo and Khasi hills region and problems of the teachers in the upcoming state Assembly session to be held next month.
Notably, the ten pressure groups pressing for implementation of ILP system in the state have called for a four-night road blockade from September 10.
The 7pm to 5am night road blockade will be effective in the 11 districts of the state.
