Over 570 grams of gold seized from air passengers this week

Gold totally weighing 578.82 gms and valued at Rs 17.42 lakh was seized by the Air Intelligence officials of the Customs at the international airport here this week.
The officials seized two crude gold chains weighing 349.8 gms and valued at Rs 10.91 lakh from a passenger who arrived by a Qatar Airways flight from Doha today, Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar said.
On February five, gold jewellery weighing 170.7 gms and valued at Rs 4.8 lakh was seized from a passenger who reached by an Air Asia Express flight from Kuala Lumpur.
In another incident on the same day, gold chain weighing 58.32 gms and valued at Rs 1.64 lakh was seized from a passenger who arrived by a Jet Airways flight from Dubai.
Due to spurt in smuggling cases, the customs sleuths were maintaining tight vigil at the airport and subjecting suspicious passengers to strict checks, Kumar said.
