Pakistan has given USD 1 million to its "close friend" Nepal for assistance in its rebuilding efforts after floods and landslides affected over six million people in August, the Foreign Office said today.
Over 120 people were killed and dozens missing in rain- triggered floods and landslides in Nepal in August.
The government had said that 2,847 houses were completely damaged in the disaster which had affected over six million people across the country.
Pakistan's Ambassador to Nepal Mazhar Javed yesterday handed over the cheque of USD 1 million to Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba as an expression of solidarity with people and the government, the Foreign Office (FO) said in a statement.
"The contribution is from the people and the Government of Pakistan for our Nepalese brothers and sisters who suffered loss of lives and livelihood," the FO said.
"Nepal is a close friend in our neighbourhood and a SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) member," it said.
The 19th SAARC Summit, which was scheduled to be held in Islamabad last year, was indefinitely postponed after India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh among others pulled out of the event.
The assistance will further strengthen the bilateral relations and the friendship of the people of the two countries, the FO added.
