The authorities in Nepal have declared parts of Kathmandu district as a "bird flu emergency zone" for three months to check an outbreak of the deadly disease.
Following the declaration of Bhaktapur district as a "bird flu emergency zone" few days ago, the government extended the measure to parts of the capital city, officials said.
"This decision will be effective from today onwards for three months," said Narayan Ghimire, spokesperson for the government's bird flu control division.
The parts of Kathmandu district include 11 Village Development Committees (VDCs), Kirtipur municipality and some parts of Kathmandu Metropolitan committee.
The 11 VDCs include Chalnakhel, Thankot, Satungal, Purano Naikap, Ban Bhanjyang, Matatirtha, Mulpani, Gothatar, Machhegaun, Mahadevsthan and Dahachok.
Similarly, Pepsicola area or ward number 35 of Kathmandu Metro was also declared as the emergency zone.
Under the provision of emergency zone, all fowls including chickens will be culled, while feed, egg and excreta will be properly destroyed and disposed. Sales, supplies and farming of fowls will also be banned in the area.
On Wednesday, the government declared Bhaktapur district, 13 km east of Kathmandu, as a "bird flu emergency zone" after the failure of measures to control the disease that caused panic among local residents.
Bird flu was first reported in the district some two weeks ago, which prompted authorities to cull nearly 54,000 chickens.
