Punjab Director General of Police Suresh Arora today called upon the public to assist police in eradicating the menace of drugs from the state, the same way they assisted in eliminating militancy.

He said that the police is committed to eradicating the menace from the state and assured that several steps are being taken in this regard.

Punjab is passing through a phase of change at the moment, the DGP said at a drugs awareness programme in Doraha.

During this positive change, a large number of addicts are coming forward themselves to shun drugs, he said.

Arora said that properties worth over Rs 220 crore of drug smugglers arrested by the Punjab police in the last 3-4 years were attached by the government.

All this amount goes to the central government, he added.

If some amount of such money is given to the state government, it would help it in eradicating drugs and subsequently lead to former drug addicts join the mainstream.

Arora said militancy was eradicated at the grassroots level in the state because public supported the Punjab police.

And now, if people support the police in the same manner to eradicate drugs, day is not far when drug menace will be wiped out from the state, he said.

Arora asserted that no action would be taken against those who voluntarily come to drug de-addiction centres to shun the menace. Instead, the Punjab police would help them to become part of the mainstream, the DGP said.

He noted that with the help of pubic, an anti-drug sentiment is growing in the state which is "a matter of great pride".
