A petition has been filed in the Bombay High Court seeking registration of an FIR against two constables, attached with Chembur police station, in connection with the alleged custodial death of one Naushad Shaikh picked up in connection with a robbery case.
The petition filed by one Ibrahim, who was picked up along with Naushad last week, has claimed Naushad was thrashed by police in the lock-up and sought a probe by Crime Investigation Department (CID).
According to police, Naushad committed suicide by banging his head against the wall of the lock-up.
The petitioner said he, along with the victim, was picked up by six policemen in civil clothes on March 17 and taken to suburban Chembur police station in private vehicles. They were not informed why they were being taken in custody and neither of their families contacted.
The petition alleged two police constables, Dilip Sawant and Sanjay Dehala, entered the lock-up and started interrogating Naushad. The constables began assaulting Naushad with a cricket stump, a bat, a metal chain and a thick belt, the petition said.
"Because of the attack, Naushad bled profusely and he collapsed on the floor," Ibrahim said in the petition.
Ibrahim has requested the high court to direct the senior police inspector of Chembur police station to file an FIR against the two constables and transfer the investigation to CID.
The petition will come up for hearing in due course of time.
