Replying to questions in Rajya Sabha, HRD Minister Smriti Irani said the number of students enrolled in NITs too increased to 84,441 from about 75,719 during the period.
She said continuous efforts were being made to ensure that no faculty position was left vacant in the NITs and added that the faculty strength stood at 4,659 in December 2014.
The Minister informed that the first-ever Conference of the Directors of the NITs was convened by the President.
Meanwhile, replying to other questions Minister of State for HRD Upendra Kushwaha said government was aiming at achieving 80 per cent literacy rate in the country by 2017.
The Census 2011, reported the percentage of literacy in the country as 72.98 per cent.
