A public interest litigation filed in the Bombay High Court has sought a CBI probe of the attack on veteran CPI leader Govind Pansare and his wife Uma.
Petitioner, former journalist Ketan Tirodkar, has said the attack on Pansare couple was similar to the murder of anti-superstition activist Dr Narendra Dabholkar in Pune two years ago.
Pansare and his wife were shot by unidentified assailants near their house in Kolhapur on Monday. Both are being treated at a local hospital.
The PIL claims that Pansare had received threats that he will meet the same fate as Dabholkar. Further, as in Dabholkar case, the attack took place when Pansares were out on a morning walk and the attackers came and fled on a bike, it points out.
Like Dabholkar, Pansare too is a rationalist and anti-superstition activist, it says.
The special teams of state police failed to make any progress in Dabholkar murder case due to pressure from some elements, it alleges.
CBI later took over Dabholkar case but the probe had already been "sabotaged," it adds.
Even in the RTI activist Satish Shetty murder case, the local police "sabotaged" the evidence, framing up wrong persons and CBI had not made any breakthrough subsequently, it says.
