A detailed proposal to make Madurai one of the 12 smart cities in the state has been sent to the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (TNIDF) for further action, city Mayor Rajan Chellappa said here today.
A resolution in this regard was passed at a meeting of the Corporation council today, he said.
Madurai City will have to make equal contribution along with the state government for the project.
The Council decided to install water purification plant at 133 localities here to provide pure drinking water. Besides 26 public toilet facilities would be built in slums, he said.
The corporation decided to ban demonstrations and agitations in its premises. Ruling party councillors expressed dissatisfaction over the management of the water supply system, non-maintenance of underground drainage system and storm water drains and said they were in bad shape.
In many places drinking water got mixed with sewage, said AIADMK councillors Jayavel and Shanmugavalli.
The councillors also complained of poor quality street lights.
