Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condoled the death of noted journalist Dileep Padgaonkar, saying he was a leading public thinker whose contribution to journalism will always be remembered.
"Mr. Dileep Padgaonkar was a leading public thinker whose contribution to journalism will always be remembered. Pained by his demise. RIP," Modi tweeted.
72-year-old Padgaonkar, a former editor of The Times of India, was unwell for past several weeks and died at a hospital in Pune, family sources said.
Padgaonkar began his career in journalism at an early age and joined the Times of India as its Paris correspondent after receiving a doctorate in humanities in 1968.
He served the paper in various capacities before he was appointed its editor in 1988, a post he held for six years.

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah also paid tributes to veteran journalist Dileep Padgaonkar, who died this morning, terming him an "honest broker".
"So sorry to hear about the death of Dileep Padgaonkar earlier today. I have fond memories of my many interactions with him. RIP Dileep Sb," Omar wrote on twitter soon after the news of the journalist's death.
The National Conference working president lauded the role played by Padgaonkar as Centre's interlocutor on Kashmir in the aftermath of the 2010 summer agitation in the valley when Omar was the Chief Minister of the state.
"Dileep Padgaonkar won many friends and admirers during his many visits to J&K as an interlocutor. He was a patient listener and an honest broker," he added.
