A senior Kerala High Court judge today sought a judicial intervention "at the earliest" to restrain political parties from organising election campaign celebrations by completely blocking public transport system across the state.
In a letter to the Registrar General of the High Court, Justice B Kemal Pasha voiced concern over the severe traffic blocks all over Kerala for more than five hours as a celebration of the culmination of election campaign on May 14 ahead of the May 16 elections.
Seeking judicial intervention on the issue, Justice Kemal Pasha said it is a harsh reality that the literate public in Kerala had to face severe agony on various roads in the state in the afternoon and evening of May 14 on account of severe traffic block in National Highways and other roads.
"In almost all the important road junctions, persons and other hooligans under the guise of celebrating the culmination of election propaganda were dancing on the middle of the road," he said.
He requested the Registrar General to place the letter before the Division Bench of the High Court to consider whether the same could be treated as a Public Interest Litigation, and for necessary action.
Noting that the political parties or persons under them have no right to make use of the public road as a "playground at their whims and fancies", he said "at any cost, they should be restrained from such activities through necessary judicial intervention at the earliest".
