Port trust man, banker sentenced to jail in CBI cases

Deputy chief mechanical engineer of Chennai Port Trust and a branch manager of a public sector bank were convicted and sentenced to two and three years rigorous imprisonment respectively in different cases and by separate CBI courts.
XIII Additional Special Judge for CBI cases, S Jawahar, sentenced Port Trust engineer V Prabhakar to two years RI for accepting bribe under Prevention of Corruption Act, CBI's Anti Corruption Branch said here today in a press release.
The prosecution case was that Prabhakar demanded and accepted a bribe of Rs 25,000 from an employee of a steamer agency. A fine of Rs 20,000 was also imposed on him.

He had sought the bribe for modifying an order issued by him over payment of fresh security deposit.
In a case of fraud against Bank of India branch manager R Krishnamurthy and another person, XI Additional Special Judge for CBI cases, K Venkatasamy, sentenced the duo to three years of RI. A fine of Rs 10 lakh was also imposed on each one of them.
In 1993, a total of seven accused persons, including Krishnamurthy, had entered into a criminal conspiracy to cheat Bank of India, according to the prosecution.

As branch manager, he abused his official position and sanctioned export credit and packing credit loan of Rs 15 lakh to T K Subramanian. It was done despite discrepancies in documents and knowing well that Subramanian was not engaged in any leather export business, it said.

During the trial, four accused persons, including Subramanian, passed away and charges against them abated and one person was acquitted.
R Krishnamurthy and Sampath were convicted and sentenced to undergo imprisonment.
