After a search of over four years, the prime accused in the infamous Park Street gangrape case was today arrested by Kolkata Police from Uttar Pradesh's Greater Noida.
Kader Khan and his accomplice Ali Khan were arrested in the early hours today and brought to the city this morning. They were produced before a city court, which remanded the duo to police custody till October 14.
Deputy Commissioner (South) of Kolkata Police, Murli Dhar said the duo were arrested by a special team of Kolkata Police in a joint operation with local police from their hideout at a paying guest accommodation at Sector Alpha under Kasna Police Station limits of Greater Noida.
"We got some inputs from our sources about Kader's hideout in and around New Delhi and a few days back a special team was sent to the national capital. The team arrested Kader and Ali from their shelter during a raid around 1.10 AM," Dhar said.
The duo were staying with their nephew, a B.Tech student at his PG accommodation in a posh area under pseudo names - Bare mamu and Chote mamu - and had gone to attend a birthday party, around 50 km away at Jamianagar and returned to their hideout at around 12.45 AM, a senior officer said.
Sensing the presence of police around the place, Kader and Ali tried to escape by jumping from the building's terrace to the adjoining house.
"They hid inside the water tank of the adjoining building but was spotted by one of our officers who caught them," he said.
The victim, a mother of two, was gangraped on February 6, 2012 by five men who had offered to drop her home from a night club at city's Park Street area.
Kader and Ali had hid themselves at the residences of their various relatives in cities of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Delhi since they went absconding, a senior KP officer said.
