Projects worth more than 1500 crore were approved under Nirbhaya fund in the past two years while schemes of over 400 crore have already been put under implementation, a senior Women and Child Development ministry official claimed today.
Reprimanding the government for sitting on Nirbhaya fund which has a corpus of over 3000 crore, Supreme Court had yesterday asked it to formulate a national policy for proper rehabilitation of rape survivors.
Women and Child Development Ministry was made the nodal agency for the Nirbhaya Fund in April, 2015, in place of the Home Ministry.
However, the Ministry has taken off only two major projects under the scheme which include the universal women's helpline and the one stop crisis centers.
The other projects approved under the fund include four Home Ministry schemes, two each of Delhi Police and Delhi government and one from the Railways.
"We had received two projects from Delhi police which have been sanctioned under the fund. One is hiring of professional counsellors at the district and sub-divisional police station level in Delhi with project cost of 6.20 crore and the other is the construction of new building with women centric facilities for Special Unit for Women and Children and Special Unit for North East Region at Nanakpura, with project cost of 23.53 crore," the official said.
He said the government has also approved Central Victim Compensation Fund (200 crore), investigative units for crime against Women (324 crore), Cyber Crime Prevention against Women and Children (244.32 Crore) and Organized Crime Investigative Agency (83.20 Crore) as proposed by the Home Ministry
Apart from that, Delhi government had proposed to install CCTV Cameras and GPS devices in 6655 buses (140.00 crore) and 100 strategic located modern stainless steel bus queue shelters (1.87 crore) to strengthen the safety of women in public transport buses which have been recommended by the ministry.
