State Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Dairy Development minister Gulzar Singh Ranike informed the Assembly that the decision to build cattle pounds was taken by the state cabinet on September 23, 2014.
"So far, 25 acres of land has been acquired in different districts of the state for the purpose," he said, adding, each cattle pound would have the facility to keep 2,000 stray animals.
Ranike was replying to a calling attention notice moved by Congress MLA Ajit Inder Singh Mofar during the ongoing Budget session of the House on the problem of stray animals roaming the highways in the state.
Later, the House debated on a non-official resolution moved by eight MLAs both from treasury and opposition benches, asking the state government to take effective steps to check the number of fatal accidents taking place on account of stray animals roaming freely on roads.
During the discussion on the resolutions at one point of time majority of members of the House were not present.
