Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao today said reservation to poor Muslims in the state would be provided proportionate to their population on the lines of reservations adopted in states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
Rao reviewed the functioning of the commission set up to study the conditions of Muslims in the state, a release from his office said.
The ruling TRS had promised 12 per cent reservation to Muslims during last year's elections.
The procedures adopted by the Sachar Committee appointed by the Centre and Rehman Committee in Maharashtra and the study to be conducted in Telangana were discussed in the meeting, the release said.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Mehmood Ali, Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi and several other senior officials, it added.
Rao observed that Muslims numbered up to 12 per cent in Telangana and that most of them are poor.
The long term, mid term and short term programmes needed to be taken up for the uplift of Muslims should be suggested, the release quoted Rao as saying.
Noting that the government has initiated measures like enhancing budget allocations and setting up hostels for the benefit of Muslim minorities in the state, he said special programmes would be implemented after receiving the report of the commission.
