'Student Police Cadet' programme will be inaugurated from the Tau Devi Lal Sports complex at Gurgaon on December 24 by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Haryana's Additional Director General of Police, O P Singh, who is in-charge of the event, said today.
He said Rajnath Singh will be the chief guest and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar will preside over the event.
"The programme is for students of class eight and nine and is aimed at promoting in them discipline, civic consciousness and a culture of voluntary compliance to law," the senior IPS officer said.
To create awareness about the programme, it would be anchored by students selected through Online Anchoring Talent Search Contest, O P Singh said.
"While the programme is for students of Class eight and nine, the contest will be open for students in class nine to 12 from December 5-15.
"The contestants need to upload a two-minute video in Hindi or English on Facebook.com/studentpolicecadetprogram, showcasing their anchoring talent by speaking preferably about Student Police Cadet Programme," the IPS officer said.
"A jury will view the videos and shortlist 16 contestants, eight girls, for auditions on the basis of their stage confidence, diction and the number of 'likes' and 'shares' their video attract from viewers," he said.
O P Singh said the jury will finally select four winners, including two girls, and the final result would be announced on December 20.
Apart from the opportunity to anchor the programme in the presence of the home minister, the winners would be awarded commendation certificates, computers, smartphones, hard drives, discount hampers and other things.
"We want the event to carry a stamp of young children. One way to do it is to let them manage the stage," P Singh said.
The 'Student Police Cadet Programme' is an initiative of the central government, which will be implemented by the police in their states, he said.
The programme aims at encouraging the students to know police from close quarters. The idea is to help them understand the importance of rule of law and its role in peace, development and sustained creation of new income and employment opportunities, the officer said.
"The takeaway for student cadets from the programme will be an informed mind, understanding how the rule of law is achieved and an opportunity to be ambassadors of a culture of wilful and voluntary compliance to law.
"On the other hand, the police will have a better insight into the impact they are making on the society through their work. In addition, they will also be able to encourage and motivate bright young kids to look for a career in police," he said.
