Head of Nepal's interim government today appealed to the people to seize the historic opportunity of drafting a new constitution by making the upcoming elections successful.
"As the Constituent Assembly (CA) would be drafting a new constitution, we should all work together to make the upcoming CA elections successful," Chairman of Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi said.
Stating that the present Government has been creating an atmosphere conducive for election by introducing the Ordinance on election regulations, announcing the date and improving law and order situation, Chief Justice Regmi called on political parties to cooperate.
President Dr Ram Baran Yadav has already signed the government-forwarded election ordinance into law, clearing legal hurdles for the upcoming elections on November 19.
Regmi asked all to understand the need for attaining political stability in the country through elections and said that the government and the election commission are working in close coordination to conduct the polls.
Meanwhile, Minister for Home and Foreign Affairs Madhav Prasad Ghimire today met with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Geneva.
Ghimire updated Moon on the current situation in Nepal, in particular the progress on the peace process and the preparation being made for holding the elections. He also expressed hope that UN would continue its support in the coming months to make the elections successful.
Ghimire reiterated the government's commitment to hold the Constituent Assembly elections in a free and fair manner.
The Secretary-General said that the recent political developments taking place in Nepal is encouraging. He appreciated the efforts made towards holding elections and expressed the hope that elections will be held in a credible and democratic.
He pledged UN's full support to Nepal's political process. "Sustainable political stability helps achieve further progress on sustainable development," he said.
Nepal had plunged into a political and constitutional crisis after the Constituent Assembly was dissolved without promulgating the Constitution last year and fresh elections to be held in November, 2012, did not take place, pushing the country into a political deadlock.
With the formation of the election government led by Regmi in March, the political parties had earlier tentatively agreed to conduct the elections in June or by December this year.
