A teenager hailing from a remote north Bengal village would be seen dribbling past opposition players when she takes the field in the Indian Women's League, commencing in Kolhapur tomorrow.
Mini Roy, a student of Sarala Bhupendranath Uccha Vidyalaya at Kushmandi in South Dinajpur district, would play for the Chandney Sporting Club of Kolkata.
Dr Satyajit Sarkar, headmaster of the school, said: "Mini is a class XI student of our school. She will play for Chandney Sporting Club of Kolkata in the Indian Women's League."
Sarkar, who played a major role in developing football infrastructure in the co-education school, said the girls' football team showed good results consistently since 2012 in local, district and state level.
Mini is playing in the team since the team was formed in the year 2011.
The school team recently clinched the trophy in an IFA organised zonal tournament for U-17 girls in Hooghly district, where the nimble footed forward was spotted by the Chandney Sporting Club officials.
Mini said she would try to prove that girls from remote villages can also excel in sports.
Mini's father Manindranath Roy, a daily wage earner, thanked the headmaster for what he had done for her daughter.
"My daughter plays in the school besides studying. Daughters of poor people like us had never got a chance to play these games.
"This headmaster is mad for sports. My daughter and other girls are playing at this level because of him," Manindranath Roy said.
