The Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) has demanded that the central government conduct a prompt and impartial investigation into the death of two protestors in police firing at Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh recently.
Condemning the killings on May 2, the FORUM-ASIA also demanded that action be taken against those responsible for the killings and asked the central government to ensure freedom of assembly and to protect the life and liberty of the protestors.
FORUM-ASIA also believes that an independent investigation into the whole incident is essential focussing on the role of political leaders and police officials to ascertain the proportionality of the force used and to fix accountability for the loss of human life.
Two persons died in the police firing and many were injured when a group of people protested against the arrest of Lobsang Gyatso, a Buddhist monk who has been actively opposing mega dam projects in Tawang, said a press release by the regional human rights group FORUM-ASIA.
