SAD warns against any amendment in Sikh Gurudwara Act

It also described it as a "direct interference" in the religious affairs of the Sikhs.

In a meeting of the core committee held under Chairmanship of SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal at the Chief Minister's residence here, the party felt that the proposed amendment bill violated the letter and spirit of the agreement reached between then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Akali stalwart Master Tara Singh, known as Nehru-Tara Singh Pact.

The pact specifically stated the commitment of the Central government not to take any step with regard to the affairs of the Sikh community without consultation with and consent of the representatives of the Sikh community through SGPC.

Briefing about the meeting, SAD secretary Daljeet Singh Cheema said the core committee realised that the proposed move of the Delhi Government aimed at further delaying the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) elections scheduled to take place in January, 2011 thereby giving undue benefits to the ruling office-bearers of the 'Committee' to cling to their offices and enjoy an extended term.

Warning the Union government, the SAD said this attempt on part of government would lead to fresh suspicion, resentment and alienation in the minds of the Sikh community.

Seeking personal intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in this crucial issue, the core committee asked him to take appropriate measures to stop the Delhi Government from going ahead with the proposed move. MORE
