A holiday has been declared on Wednesday for schools and colleges in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi in view of the heavy rains and a red alert has been sounded in the region.
Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Sasikanth Senthil said the decision on the holiday was taken on the basis of the report from meteorological department.
Udupi deputy commissioner Hephsibha Rani Korlapati said a red alert has been declared and the administration would consider extending the holidays if rains continued.
A team of National Disaster Response Force has been deployed at Suratkal in Dakshina Kannada district to reach the rain-affected areas in case of an emergency, she said.
