CPI today reiterated its demand for the release of caste-based data of the Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC) so that special programmes can be planned for uplift of those "who have been maltreated and suppressed in the name of caste".

"The party demands immediate release of caste data so that special programmes can be planned for upliftment of those who have been maltreated and suppressed in the name of caste," CPI general secretary S Sudhakar Reddy said in a statement.

Reddy further said it is "surprised" to note that the SECC 2011 report, released recently, does not provide details of the caste component.

The party failed to understand why the government is silent on missing data, its collection, tabulation and time of release, he added.

Released on July 3, the long-awaited SECC projected a very grim picture of rural India.

According to the Census, the highest earning member in about three-fourths of all rural households in the country made less than Rs 5,000 per month.

The report stated that there were 13.34 crore or 74.49% households where "monthly income of highest earning household member" was below Rs 5,000.

The Centre has refrained from releasing caste-based data in its first SECC released in eight decades and maintained it was concerned with economic data which will help in effective implementation of its programmes.
