A "maritime blindness", which plagued the country a few decades ago, is fast fading away, National Maritime Foundation Director Vijay Sakhuja said here today.
He was speaking at a seminar on 'Indian Maritime Legacy: Perspective and Progress' at INHS Asvini Auditorium in Colaba, here today.
The two-day event is being organised by the Maritime History Society (MHS), a Defence release said.
Sakhuja delivered the keynote address during the inaugural session today.
"Despite the rich maritime history of the country, a maritime blindness plagued the country a few decades ago. This is fast fading away," he said.
This year the annual seminar takes a broad overview of different periods and perspectives of India's Maritime History with an aim to identify areas of focus in India's march forward towards greater success in the maritime dimension.
A set of 15 young maritime professionals are presenting together eight papers in three sessions over two days. A number of people involved and interested in maritime history are attending the seminar.
Cmde Sanjay Roy, Commodore Commanding Submarines (West), will give the valedictory address at the close tomorrow.
The Society will subsequently bring out a compendium of the papers presented and the discussions.
Maritime History Society (MHS) came into being on May 12, 1978 with the aim of promoting the study of our maritime history and enhancing an awareness of our maritime heritage among the youth.
The MHS has been organising seminars and talks on India's Maritime Heritage and related subjects of interest. It periodically sponsors research projects on Maritime History.
The Society reached a milestone when its first publication Essays in Maritime Studies was released on March 30, 1998. From those modest forays in publishing, the Society has now published a total of twenty books on maritime history.
