Both BSE Sensex and CNX Nifty hit their fresh record highs during the morning session on persistent buying in stocks of capital goods, realty, consumer durables, auto and healthcare sectors.
The 30-share Sensex resumed higher at 22,729.46 and firmed up immediately to an all-time high of 22,792.49 before quoting at 22,721.78 at 1000 hours, showing a gain of 19.44 points, or 0.09 per cent, from its last close.
However, the NSE 50-share Nifty eased by 3.90 points, or 0.06 per cent, to 6,792.30 at 1000 hours after hitting an all-time high of 6,816.45 during the morning trade.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) continued their buying spree as they bought net Rs 1043.86 crore yesterday as per provisional data from the stock exchanges.
Major gainers were Sun Pharma (2.26 pct), SSLT (1.27 pct), BHEL (1.21 pct), Tata Motors (1.19 pct), HDFC (0.87 pct), SBI (0.70 pct), NTPC (0.62 pct) and RIL (0.61 pct).
US stocks rallied yesterday, with technology shares gaining the most in two months, as minutes from the Federal Reserve's last meeting eased concern about the timing of future interest-rate increases.
However, most Asian stocks edged lower in their early trade as Chinese trade figures unexpectedly fell, tempering optimism after the Federal Reserve eased concern about when US rates will rise.
Key benchmark indices in Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea were down 0.16 pct to 2.75 pct while China, Hong Kong and Japan rose 0.04 pct to 0.69 pct.
